• Hal Goldstein


    Hal Goldstein brings a diverse background in architecture, engineering and interior design to his firm. Between 1990 and 1993, Hal worked for the New York architecture firms I.M. Pei & Partners and Steven Holl Architects. Following that, he worked for the structural engineering firm Leslie E. Robertson Associates as a Project Architect for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in New York City. Later he joined the interior design firm Naomi Leff & Associates as a project architect, overseeing retail and residential projects, including the Holt Renfrew flagship store in Toronto, Ontario, and private residences in Westport, CT and Palm Beach, FL. Hal co-founded Janson Goldstein LLP with Mark Janson in 1995.

    Hal graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in 1990.

  • Mark Janson


    Mark Janson has more than 30 years of experience in architecture and interior design. At Steven Holl Architects between 1982 and 1988, Mark was team leader for a broad range of projects, including the Van Zandt and Berkowitz residences, both of which received Progressive Architecture Awards, and the Bridge of Houses (now the High Line), which is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. In 1990, he joined Naomi Leff & Associates. As senior associate, he was responsible for all Giorgio Armani Collection stores in the US, and with Steven Scuro, led the team that developed the A/X Armani Exchange prototype concept. He also designed the Emporio Cafe in Boston, the Windsor Beach Club in Vero Beach, FL, and large private residences in Palm Beach, FL, Westport, CT, and Telluride, CO. Mark co-founded Janson Goldstein LLP with Hal Goldstein in 1995.

    Mark received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from Parsons School of Design in 1982.

  • Steven Scuro


    Steven Scuro joined Janson Goldstein as partner in spring 2000. From 1993 to 2000, Steven was with Donna Karan International, where he was corporate vice president of retail development. In that position, he managed the in-house group and developed retail concepts for all Donna Karan Collection and DKNY divisions worldwide, including the DKNY World Flagship on Madison Avenue, working with Janson Goldstein. Steven was also responsible for providing creative direction to ensure global brand consistency at the retail level for all licensed divisions. Before joining DKI, Steven was a senior account/project manager with Naomi Leff & Associates, where he managed Gucci, Holt Renfrew and A/X Armani Exchange projects throughout North America. He previously worked with interior designer John Saladino, creating interiors and furnishings for private residences in California, New York and Connecticut.

    Steven graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 1985.

  • Takaaki Kawabata

    Senior Associate

    Takaaki Kawabata joined Janson Goldstein LLP in 1998. As a senior associate, he has been the team leader for the design and execution of the Holt Renfrew flagships in Calgary and Vancouver and for the development of the Mori Building Luxury Tower concept in Japan. He has designed and executed projects for Emporio Armani, Salvatore Feragamo, Donna Karan, CK Jeans, Kohler, Ann Sacks and a number of private residential projects.

    Takaaki comes from a family of architects and builders in his native country of Japan. Before joining Janson Goldstein LLP, he worked for Jack Travis Architect, Vignelli Associates and Boyega Design where his experience covered a wide range of projects including work at the Miami Airport, a Church in the Bronx and exhibitions at the Guggenheim museum.

    Takaaki graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York in 1995. He has also been an adjunct professor of interior design at FIT since Fall 2000.
  • Matthew Jasion


    Matthew Jasion has been with JG since 2003. Matthew is currently the Associate in charge of store design and execution for Intermix, the women's fashion multi-brand retailer. Matthew has also served as JG's creative director in charge of store design for Calvin Klein projects, including spearheading the design of PVH's new 20,000 sf Calvin Klein off-price concept, now being rolled out across North America.

    Prior to joining JG, Matthew worked for the famed Aldo Rossi Studio di Architettura's Manhattan office and for Masahiro Ikeda in Tokyo. Matthew also had his own firm in Tokyo, MAaK, where he designed luxury stores throughout Japan and China.

    Matthew graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998.

  • Camaal Benoit


    Camaal Benoit has been with JG since 2006. Camaal is currently the Associate in Charge of Interior Planning and Design for all Holt Renfrew projects, including new 120,000 sf stores in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario. Camaal had the same role in previous HR flagship locations in Vancouver and Calgary. In addition, Camaal has executed several high profile residential projects, including a small estate in Bedford, NY and a one-of-a-kind Manhattan penthouse, which was featured on the October 2011 cover of Architectural Digest.

    Prior to joining JG, Camaal was a project manager with an expertise in CAD management and worked with several leading architecture firms preparing design and construction documents. Camaal currently serves as JG's Chief Technology Officer.

    Camaal graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from City College of New York in 2003.

  • Heidi Engstrom

    Director of Special Projects

    Heidi Engstrom has been with JG since 2009. As Director of Special Projects, her portfolio ranges from leading interior design projects to managing the firm's marketing and new business development. As part of the Interiors group, her major projects have included the East Hampton Residence, Holt Renfrew Yorkdale, and the 74th Street Townhouse. Heidi also oversees the website and portfolio design.

    Heidi is also a professional opera singer and holds a degree in Voice from Mannes College of Music.
